Configuration settings for Power BI Services

Enhance DirectQuery efficiency and resolve Power BI-related slowdowns by modifying the following settings. These adjustments should be made on the semantic model tab in Power BI Services after the Power BI Dashboard or Power BI worksheet has been published. Implementing these configurations will improve performance.

Query Caching in Power BI Premium

Power BI Premium offers query caching, a feature that enhances the performance of reports linked to a semantic model. The system avoids repeatedly querying the underlying data source by caching query results within the Premium capacity's local service.

The query cache stores results specific to the user and the semantic model, while consistently respecting defined security rules. Performance improvements are maximized when a semantic model experiences high access frequency and low refresh requirements. Query caching also reduces capacity utilization by minimizing the total number of queries executed.

To modify this default, you can adjust the settings in Power BI services

Large Semantic Models in Power BI Premium

Power BI utilizes a highly compressed in-memory cache for data storage to deliver optimized query performance and fast user interactivity. Power BI Premium extends this capability to handle large datasets through the Large semantic model storage format setting, overcoming default size limitations.

Query Scale – Out

This system isolates refresh operations from query processing to enhance efficiency, handle high query volumes, and automatically distributes queries across multiple replicas.
