Measures vs Dimensions Conversion
Converting fields between measures and dimensions changes how Tableau treats and aggregates them, enabling different analytical approaches. Dimensions create headers and groups, while measures aggregate numerically. In the case of Kyvos, if semantic model fields are defined as dimensions in semantic model design, then the user must use them as dimensions in Tableau. If it’s defined as a measure in the semantic model, then it must be used as a measure in Tableau. Sometimes Tableau (without Kyvos-generated TDS) considers numeric fields as measures, so the user needs to make a proper conversion similar to the one defined in the semantic model. Wrong conversion may cause query failure.
To apply measures to dimension conversion, perform the following steps.
Connect Tableau with the Kyvos semantic model (without Kyvos-generated TDS).
Tableau will show some of the dimension fields as a measure because Tableau automatically senses it based on the data type. Example. “Day of month,” which is defined as a dimension in the semantic model, but Tableau senses it as a measure.
Open the drop-down for Day of month and select the option to convert it to a dimension. Tableau will show it under the dimension section after the conversion.
Now the user can use it in the visualization and generate a query through that field.
